Always in the green bin: pencil and other wood shavings

Pencil and other wood shavings, like sawdust, can go in your green bin.

If you have your own composting system set up, you may like to add small amounts of wood shavings – particularly if you have a lot of wet food materials in your compost.

Sawdust and pencil shavings are considered ‘brown’ composting material, and are used to add carbon to the mix, helping to balance the nitrogen from the ‘green’ composting materials, like food.
