Always keep your recyclables loose

When placing items in your recycling bin, keep them loose and free of plastic bags.

When a bag of recyclables arrives at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) it is sent straight to landfill due to contamination and safety risks.

Plastic bags, strapping, hoses, string and rope can also wrap and tangle around machinery at the MRF, preventing the machinery from working effectively.

Plastic bags and other soft plastics also cause problems by getting caught in the paper and cardboard stream, creating contamination and reducing the value and recyclability of the paper and cardboard.

All soft plastics should be placed in your red/blue landfill bin.
